SCOTTISH rock star Shirley Manson is leading a counter-attack against fur-wearing celebrities by posing in a shocking poster with the skinned carcass of a fox.

Clad in a stunning Stella McCartney evening gown, Manson holds up the skinned animal beside the provocative caption: "Here is the rest of your fur coat".

Wearing fur has once again become irresistible to a growing number of Britain's style icons including Naomi Campbell and UK-based Madonna.

But this week former Garbage singer Manson will retaliate by appearing in the hard-hitting adverts as the new face of the latest campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

Shot in Los Angeles by top photographer Frank W Ockenfels, the image is intended to display the bloody reality behind glamorous fur ads and fashion spreads. The poster campaign will start in Edinburgh, Manson's home town, before rolling out to cities across Europe during 2007.

Manson, who is based in Los Angeles and currently recording her first solo album, said: "I believe very strongly in the ethical treatment of animals. A lot of my fans are very pro-animal rights and have often, when I have been wearing fake fur, said: 'Is that real?' and really gotten upset, and I have had to reassure them: 'No it's cool, it's fake, don't worry.'"

She added: "They have made me very conscious of it, and I am really grateful that they have made me pay attention."

In the past year, an increasing number of celebrities have unapologetically donned fur. Madonna wore a Ј35,000 coat made from the skins of 40 chinchillas in December. Naomi Campbell - who once posed for an anti-fur ad for Peta - followed in February flaunting a fur-trimmed parka on the catwalk. This month Kate Moss joined pro-fur stars wearing a 12-fox fur coat. Hollywood actress Sharon Stone has also been seen in fur.

Anita Singh of Peta said: "Shirley Manson feels very strongly about the fur industry. She wants to use her influence to tell people across the world that life on fur farms is hell.

"Millions of animals are beaten and battered on fur farms every year. We have videos of animals dying for their skin after being strangled or brutally smashed in the head. Many of them wake up while being skinned alive. The cruelty is the same, whether it's minx, fox, rabbit or bear."

Singh added: "More and more designers and celebrities are acknowledging the fact that it is cruel to wear fur and that fashion should be fun, not grisly. Because of the stigma attached to wearing fur, and widespread awareness about this cruel trade, most people are now ashamed of wearing fur."

Mary McGowne, founder of the Scottish Fashion Awards, said: "There has been an increasing and alarming trend over the past few seasons to use fur again by some designers.

"It's worrying that influential celebrities like Madonna now endorse fur as a fashion commodity. Such endorsement penetrates the public.

"It's so important that other celebrities, like Manson, support Peta's campaign. If people knew the process involved in producing a fur garment, I'm sure they would vomit."

Twenty years ago, fur-wearing women were splattered by paint in the street as widespread public awareness about the trade prompted protests against the pro-fur minority.

But in recent times Elizabeth Jagger has been spotted in a jacket with fox fur detail, Sophie Dahl has been photographed in a white mink coat with a fox fur collar, and actress Melanie Griffith has been sighted in a jacket trimmed with fox and rabbit fur.

Members of the general public are following suit. Recent figures show that British fur sales have increased by a third in two years to Ј500m and worldwide by some 25%. Now Harrods is selling fur again, along with high-street shop Joseph.

Frank Zilberkweit, a director of the British Fur Trade Association and owner of the long-established London furrier Hockley, said: "You just need to look at this year's London Fashion Week. Everyone is using it. It's popularity is not confined to London. Go to New York, Milan or Paris and you'll see top names using fur. Around 400 designers worldwide used fur in their latest collection.

"Peta is employing a cheap stunt by using a fox carcass. It's a cowardly and shameful attempt to try to condemn a real industry that provides employment while regulating standards in animal welfare."

Anti-fur celebrities include Pamela Anderson, Victoria Beckham and Jordan, all of whom have said they would rather go naked than wear fur. This month, former Baywatch actress and glamour girl Anderson sent fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger flowers after he vowed to go fur-free.

Several high-street fashion retailers have also made the fur-free promise. Top Shop, Harvey Nichols, Oasis and Monsoon have strict no-fur policies. Meanwhile, leading designers such as Calvin Klein and McCartney have banned fur.

Well that photograph certainly is a bold statement. Chrissie Hynde got arrested back in 2000 in front of a gap shop for her fur protest, i was kinda waiting and half expecting for Shirley to follow that animal rights path sometime.

So Whats the difference between the fur and leather process?

hmmits a fine line... I guess with leather and cows its more resorceful in that leather is created and meat is used up... perhaps Im looking at it too simplistically though. I dunno its like we use leather in shoes, furniture lots - with like chincillas its just coats. What bout cotton and stuff in coats? That doesnt kill so many if at all?

I understand in ancient times thats all they had but now its just fashion. If you live in New York etc you don't need fur to stay alive,if you live in the arctic I can sympathise. Im with Shirley et al on this one for those reasons

I wonder if Shirley ever saw this video before she decided to jump on the trendy train. I am disappointed.

I think advertising like this is fine, it's a well taken photograph and it clearly gets the point across.
I take an instant dislike to people who protest as a rule, but this seems perfectly acceptable.

I had seen the naked truth of how is fur made and how is the animals treated. It's so MEAN!

Shirley Manson, you had done a good job on using your influence to promote Ban of Fur. I support you!

Cotton, I believe, is from plants. Wool is sheared off sheep.....if you meant wool.
oh, and I also agree that there really is no need to be killing animals for the sake of their fur, we're in the 21st century, there's plenty of alternatives(exceptions for tribes etc, of course).

I usually consider Shirley an intelligent and reasonable person, but I'm not with her on this one...

Peta seems to be very manipulating and over exaggerating in their presentations of 'reality'. Wasn't there also a Peta scandal recently?

In relation to their slogan: "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.":
- I would never stop to eat meat. I have nothing against vegans/vegetarians, but that's their choice and I have my choice.
- Why not use leather/fur for something useful instead of discarding it?
- I think it's better to use animal testing than human testing. For all the girls out there, would you rather experience serious side-effects i.e. from make-up products on your own body?

I do, however, believe in animal welfare. During the process of raising livestock for meat products etc., the animals should not be harmed or suffer in any way.

thats the point I was trying to make - yeah I know cotton comes from bugs is it or plants - just to make the point cotton doesnt kill anything as far as Im aware - its just for fashion n its not even that atttactive which is besides the point but yeah totally agree we have hundred of alternatives which goes to show its there for a look.

Ok...many of you say that it is the extremist that give PETA a bad name. But there are several PETA stances, OFFICIAL POSITIONS, that you can not dispute. As much as I like Shirley, admire her work, think she is gorgeous; she and her Hollywood elite friends are hypocrites. How many AIDS fund raisers has she participated in? How many cancer awareness programs has she been in? And yet PETA’s official position is NO animals are to be used on ANY medical testing. Zero! Nada! (Unless you are the vice prez of PETA who is a type 1 diabetic and depends on it for HER life). Ask any doctor, and they will tell you how important animal research is in the advancement of human medicine. If you want to give your life for a rat, go ahead. I would rather cure cancer. Educate yourself and stop being sheep. It seems in cases like this, the most ignorant people are those under 25 and the upper rich elites. They think “oh, I love my cat! I would never want to hurt it! Hurray for PETA”. To support PETA as a group but say you are just for part of their message is like saying you support Al Qadea because you admire people of religion faith but don’t really like the few bad apples (and don’t get on your high horse and think I am actually comparing PETA to Al Quada, I am use it as an example of someone following a group because they sorta like part of their message and try to sweep the rest of it under the rug).

I have admired Shirley for a dozen years now, but she really dropped the ball on this one. I would rather think of her as ignorant to the subject when she agreed to do these ads than to actually support a group like this. Again, watch the video on this link, and learn something……
